Medical Assistant

Large Sacramento specialty medical office is looking for an experienced certified medical assistant.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for assisting providers with patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Responsible for appointment scheduling and chart management. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinic services. Conveys a positive image of clinic. Able to think and act independently on assigned tasks. Demonstrates increasingly more ability to troubleshoot and solve overall issues. Escalates issues to Senior MA or Clinical Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include:

Checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting providers/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.

  1. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned, which may include:

Sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing the charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Electronically send prescriptions in the EHR (Electronic Health Record) to pharmacies.

  1. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned, which may include:

Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms;

  1. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned, which may include:

Respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly. Serves and protects the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements and HIPAA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education (or substitute experience) required:

  • High School degree or GED
  • Current BCLS (Basic Critical Life Support) certification
  • Current CCMA and at least one year of MA experience

Minimum Experience required:

  • Minimum 2 years MA experience

Travel:

  • Ability to travel to and work at various office locations based on staffing needs and schedule
  • A valid CA Driver's license is required

Skills required:

  • Skill in performing tasks required and appropriate use of instruments and equipment
  • Skill in interpersonal interactions, communication and therapeutic behavior
  • Appropriate grammar and scribing skills
  • Understanding of patient education needs and ability to provide education

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of healthcare field and medical specialty
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical specialty
  • Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families
  • Knowledge of current aseptic and sterile techniques
  • Knowledge of drug calculations, administering medication and electronic sending of prescriptions

  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image
  • Ability to assess, plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others
  • Ability to coordinate patient care with team members and other appropriate departments
